Bhumi Puja or Bhumi Pujan is a Puja ceremony performed before the construction activities in the plot, land or locality. Bhoomi Pooja performed is said to lead to a happy, peaceful and harmonious living in the constructed building. Pujas are offered to Lord Ganapati, Griha Devata, Ishta Devata, Bhudevi, Lord Vishnu, Vastu Purush and Kshetrapalak along with other deities. Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), Aakash (Space), Vaayu (Air) and Prithvi (Earth) that represent the Pancha Bhutas (Five elements) are also offered prayers. Prithvi – the earth; is also mentioned as Bhoomi. Bhumi is the base, without which it is difficult to sustain. Bhoodevi or Bhoo Maata is called mother, and no life can exist without her.
Bhumi Puja is also known as Shankusthapan. Bhoomi Puja or Bhoomi Poojan is performed seeking the permission of the Supreme God and requesting for a hassle-free, safe completion of the construction project in due time. This is also done for requesting the permission from the Mother-Earth, who is the consort of Lord Vishnu in order to proceed with ground-breaking.
The occupants of the construction site including the micro-organisms, spirits if any are thereby asked to vacate the place as the construction activity could affect their peaceful existence. Bhumi Pooja is also performed seeking protection from evil forces who could hamper the construction.
Bhoomi Puja is performed before constructing on a piece of land or tilling the land. Bhoomi or Earth is considered as the Mother of all that exists. By doing this puja we are seeking permission for our actions and forgiveness for disturbing the balance and equilibrium of Mother Earth. During the Puja special Vedic sutras and hymns are chanted to appease various energies residing in the space and also to ward off any ill energies. Bhoomi Puja is performed to bring good luck and fortune to the building.
